Did you ever own an anthill farm or watch ants as they scurry across your kitchen counter? One of my favorite movies is “Ants” an animated feature film about a lesser ant who helped his ant hill companions conquer the bigger and more evil grasshopper. Ants are symbolic of hard work. They never seem to stop moving and as we are told in Proverbs 6:6-9 they succeed without any outside support. No one subsidizes there effort nor does anyone put a lot of regulations or authority figures over them to make them productive. They simply work hard and make a life for themselves.
Scripture tells us in several ways the problem with those who do not work is that they often become lazy. For those capable individuals who choose to be lazy the end result is often poverty (Prov. 6:9-11). There is truth in sayings such as the “early bird gets the worm”. For me getting up early has been the norm. The air is cool, birds are chirping, coffee smells great and my mind and body seem more in sync. I do enjoy sleep and naps happen in my life but there is so much of life to experience and laziness prevents that experience.
In addition to poverty laziness also leads to waste. In Proverbs 18:9 we see where when lazy at work you destroy time, productivity and all that goes with it. Not only does your being so damage you but it damages many others as well. Consider the affect of your work on those with whom you come in contact or who are affected by the results of your labor.
Finally in the parable of the talents we see that for those who are successful they can either use the fruits of their labor for additional success or prosperity which God encourages or if mismanaged end up with nothing. It seems to me that God appreciates entrepreneurship and frowns on any who would somehow discourage it. This then is the PROBLEM WITH LAZINESS. Now you choose to live according to Scripture or the tendency of human nature which is frowned upon by God. It is your choice.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Laziness leads to lost opportunities for those who love the Lord.
DEVOTIONAL VERSE FOR TODAY: Proverbs 8:9-11 “result of laziness”.
PRAYER FOR TODAY: Lord strengthen me in all I do.
QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT:
1. Do you view yourself as hardworking or lazy?
2. How do your efforts or lack thereof effect others?
3. How should our culture and government look at issues of waste and poverty?
4. If you were (and had resources) to be an entrepreneur what would you invest in?
