TIME TO LIGHT UP!

At one time this expression could very well have meant lighting up a cigarette. It could also be a cry emanating from homes in my area after a week of cloudiness and rain. What it means for Christians is our Divine Purpose in life.

In John 8:12 Christ tells us He is the light of the world but only as long as He is in this world (John 9:5). When the time came for Him to ascend to His Father (John 12:35) the responsibility to be light was passed on to we who follow Him. The Disciples and Apostles understood this as they heard it directly from Christ as recorded in Matthew 12:15. From those first followers the torch has now been passed on to us who live in the present.

Knowing that we are to be light perhaps it would be good to understand the source. That source being God Almighty to whom one day we shall return. God is light (1 John 1:5) and if we desire eternal union with Him we must be also. As their is no darkness in him so also with the help of the Holy Spirit we must resist and avoid darkness. Darkness brought upon us by the devil, the world and our own flesh.

To resist we must stay in God’s Word (Psalm 119:105). Our guide through this life so we do not get lost. Studying ‘The Word’ with all serious intent leads us to the wisdom of God (Daniel 2:21-22) for our lives and the lives of those we touch.

God desires to be our guide through life just as He led the children of Israel through the wilderness (Psalm 78:14). Today we again find ourselves in the wilderness in need of God’s guidance. It is time to turn to God and pray with King David “Lord lift up the light of your countenance upon us” (Psalm 4:6). We seek God’s favor as it is now our TIME TO LIGHT UP.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: A triumphant Christian life is in the likeness of the light shining from God.

DEVOTIONAL VERSE FOR TODAY: Matthew 5:14 “we are to be the light of the world”.

PRAYER FOR TODAY: Lord light me up.

QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT:

  1. How does our world light up?
  2. Do you believe to be light we must walk in Christ’s footsteps?
  3. How do you understand our light one day coming into union with God?
  4. Are you being a light to the world?
